 | Standard Schnauzer: Devoted Family Dog
Also known as the Mittelschnauzer, the lovable Standard Schnauzer originated in Germany as a farm dog that was especially good at catching rats. Standard Schnauzers are the originals out of three different types of Schnauzers. They are very solid, and quite squarely built. Although they are independently minded, they are also very loving and warm with family members. Standard schnauzers are generally good with most family pets, although any types of rodents should be caged and kept at a safe distance. Standard Schnauzers flourish in family life, and are especially friendly and easy-going with children.
The Standard Schnauzer generally can be found in solid black, silver and black, or a pepper and salt color. They are medium in size, generally falling between seventeen and twenty inches high, and thirty to forty five pounds. Their coarse and wire-like coat does not shed much, but must be brushed daily in order to prevent matting. If the Standard Schnauzer is American, it will most likely have cropped ears.
When deciding whether or not to welcome a Standard Schnauzer into the family, it is important to consider one’s lifestyle to make sure that this specific breed of dog would fit into the picture. Anyone who works long hours, leaves home often, or does not have much spare time would probably not be best suited as an owner of this breed. Standard Schnauzers are ideal for anyone who would like a companion or a family dog. These dogs desire to be part of everything that is happening in family life.
Standard Schnauzers are extremely active, and they need a lot of exercise for physical and emotional wellness. If possible, a fenced in yard would be ideal. It is important to note, however, that a very motivated Schnauzer would actually be capable of jumping over a six-foot fence!
Because the Standard Schnauzers are highly intelligent, they tend to learn very rapidly, and are generally enthusiastic about pleasing their masters. However, sometimes they can be somewhat obstinate during training.
The Standard Schnauzer is an excellent guard dog and watch dog. Warm and friendly with family and well-known friends, this type of dog is much more wary of strangers. These dogs tend to stay alert, even when resting.
Many people find that once they own one Standard Schnauzer, they want another one. These are very lovable dogs that make a fantastic addition to any prepared family.
