| Signs of Acute Illness in Dogs
Unfortunately, even the best cared for dog can get sick. Initial signs of illness include listlessness and a lack of appetite. In fact, if the dog is very sick, he won’t even be aroused by the smell or sight of his dinner. Likewise, the offer of exercise such as a walk outside or a chance to play fetch won’t get much more than a glance from him.
An acute illness is one that comes on suddenly and causes severe discomfort for your dog. Watch for the following signs as an indication of an acute illness.
- Diarrhea- Diarrhea that persists for twenty-four hours or longer is a sign that something is seriously wrong. This is especially true if blood is visible in the feces or if the diarrhea accompanies vomiting.
- Difficulty breathing- Any sign of choking or gasping for breath is a sign of severe distress.
- Swollen stomach- If the stomach becomes swollen in a drum-like manner an hour or two after the dog has eaten, this can be a sign of acute distress. If panting, excessive salivation, and obvious signs of distress occur, immediate action is important.
- Vomiting- Some vomiting is normal, particularly if the dog has eaten something that does not agree with him. In fact, dogs often eat grass in an effort to cause themselves to vomit. However, if vomiting persists for twelve or more hours, something serious may be going on with your pet this sign.
- Collapse- this may begin as a series of fits that lead to a lack of consciousness.
