 | The Siamese Cat
The Siamese cat has been held in high esteem throughout history. There are written accounts showing that Siamese cats were venerated as guardians of temples and were said to have the ability to intercede for the soul of a dead person, especially their owner. At one time, no one was permitted to own a Siamese cat except for the King or very high ranking people.
The Siamese cat originated in Siam, what is now known as Thailand. All Siamese cats have a creamy colored base to their fur with dark colored points on their ears, muzzles, tails, lower legs and paws. These cats are known for their almond shaped eyes and the bright blue shade of their eyes.
This breed of cat is very affectionate, intelligent and social. Even as adults, the Siamese cat is very playful and active. Because their eyes lack the structure that amplifies dim light in other cats and are believed to have reduced hearing ability, Siamese cats are very dependent on humans for their care. This may further explain the Siamese cat’s natural need for human companionship.
There are several other cat breeds that derived from the Siamese cat. The Balinese is the long-haired variety of the Siamese cat. Other breeds that have derived from the Siamese cat include Burmese, Himalayan, Javanese, Serengeti Cat, and several other breeds.
The Siamese cat is a great pet for anyone, for they are truly a ’people’ cat. This breed is affectionate, has a wonderful temperament toward children, and very social throughout the span of their lives.
