| The Royal Elegance of the British Shorthair
The British Shorthair is thought to be among the oldest of all cat breeds, tracing its origins all the way back to the domestic felines that lived in ancient Rome. Back then, the breed was prized for its hunting ability and its strength, and in modern times it has also come to be known for its loyalty, calm manner and of course its great beauty.
The British Shorthair continues to be a somewhat rare breed on the American side of the Atlantic, but it is steadily gaining popularity and respect, both in the show ring and with the public at large. The easy going nature and intelligent manner of the breed has continued to win over many fans, and these wonderful cats make great household companions.
The British Shorthair is a large sized cat, and as such it can lack the acrobatic skill and high energy of many smaller sized breeds. These same characteristics, however, also make the British Shorthair a wonderful lap cat, and the breed is well known for its loyalty to its owner and for its charm and intelligence. Cat owners will also love the fact that the breed is very easy to groom, and their unique face gives them a “smiling” appearance, sometimes compared to the famous Cheshire Cat of English literature. It is no wonder why the British Shorthair has become such a treasured import.
