Many people recognise the fact that dogs require regular grooming, but what about cats? Although cats are very meticulous and appear to spend hours cleaning themselves, sometimes they need a little assistance. Regular grooming will help to keep your pet’s hair in good condition and will assist in the bonding process between you and you cat.
Longhaired cats will obviously require more grooming than shorthaired varieties. You will need to groom a longhaired cat on a daily basis, but a shorthaired cat will only require a weekly groom. It is best to get your cat accustomed to being groomed from an early age – this way they will see it as part of their normal routine.
Firstly, you need to purchase a suitable brush and comb for your cat and then choose a time when he/she appears to be relaxed. Keep the sessions short at first and then increase the time as your cat gets used to it – cats ears are very sensitive, so take care when brushing or combing round them. Regular grooming not only benefits your cat, it can benefit you too if you are an allergy sufferer.
Regular grooming removes dirt from the fur and spreads natural oils throughout the coat, removing any tangled or matted areas. It also stimulates your cat’s blood circulation and removes loose hairs, particularly during shedding periods. Removing loose and unwanted hair also helps to cut down on hairballs ingested by your cat and assists in reducing floating hairs in the house - thus helping to bring relief to allergy sufferers. Regular grooming can also help you to notice any changes in the condition of your cat’s coat, any visible wounds or even lumps under the skin.
Cats usually hate water; so bathing is not a particularly good idea on a regular basis. If your cat does get very dirty or gets something very unsavoury on its coat you may need more than one person to carry out the bathing process. Always wash your cat carefully with a cat-safe shampoo and avoid contact with the eyes and ears. When you have finished, make sure that you dry your cat well with a towel and keep him/her inside to dry thoroughly.
If you have acquired a longhaired cat with a particularly matted coat, which is beyond the skills of basic grooming, it may be wise to seek professional help to start with, by consulting a veterinarian, or pet beautician.
