 | The Lovable Basset Hound
The Basset Hound is a breed of dog from the hound family. It was originally bred in France. The Basset Hound is well known for the short-legged sad appearance that endears it to its owners. The Basset Hound is a hunting and tracking dog. It tracks by it’s sense of smell therefore it is known as a scent hound.
The Basset Hound has a long sturdy body with short legs. Its ears are set low and hang low in a drooping posture. They have thick necks with loose skin that hangs around their face and head, which adds to its sad appeal. The Basset has a shorthaired smooth coat that is usually tri-colored. Black, tan and white are the usual colors of the tri-colored coat. The tip of the tail is white. There are red and white Bassets as well as grey although the grey is usually considered to be rare and undesirable according to breed standards.
Basset Hounds usually weigh between fifty to seventy-five pounds. They tend to overeat so their diet should be monitored if they are suffering from being overweight. Keeping them on a regular feeding schedule can be helpful in preventing excess weigh gain. Basset Hounds are usually quite healthy although they may be prone to bloat. They may develop hip dysplasia or arthritis especially as they age due to their short legs and stocky body structure. Their ears should be cleaned regularly since they can be prone to infection. The average lifespan of the Basset Hound is ten to twelve years although they have been known to live longer.
These dogs don’t often get the credit that they deserve for their intelligence but they are actually quite clever animals. They don’t need a lot of room to run as some other breeds do but they do enjoy exercise particularly walks with their human companions. Considering their short, stocky physique these dogs move with unexpected agility.
The only complaint most owners have about their Bassets is their tenacious stubbornness. Basset Hounds can be difficult to train due to their stubborn streak. They can be trained if the owner does so with calm patience and perseverance. Basset Hounds respond well when rewarded for good behavior.
Basset Hounds are very docile and friendly dogs. They enjoy companionship and don’t like being left alone. Bassets are deeply sensitive animals with a strong loyalty and pleasant personality. Basset Hounds make excellent family pets. They get along well with children and other pets. They love being in the company of people and make friends easily.
If you are seeking a loveable, calm companion for your family a Basset Hound can be a good choice. In fact they are considered a favorite companion breed due to their calm demeanor around children and adaptability to a multi pet household. If you choose a Basset Hound for your pet you will be rewarded with constant companionship and a lifetime of friendship.
