For many years the Irish Setter has been among the most popular and highly valued of all breeds, and it is easy to understand why. This wonderful dog is high spirited, fun loving and loves to romp and play. In addition, this breed has a royal carriage, and a beautiful presence about it. It is also known to be one of the best and most patient breeds with young children.
Since the Irish Setter is such a high energy dog, it will need plenty of space to stretch its legs. This is definitely not a dog for the apartment dweller or those with only a small backyard. The Irish Setter is also a large dog, and owners can expect their adorable puppies to keep growing until they tip the scales at anywhere from 50 to 75 pounds.
As with many breeds of dogs, there are a number of health issues to which the Irish Setter is prone. Some of the most common in the breed are hip dysplasia, eye problems, epilepsy and skin problems. Dog owners should be on the lookout for these issues and discuss any treatment options with their veterinarian.
Owners of Irish Setters should also be prepared to groom their dogs on a regular basis to keep the coat looking great and to keep shedding to a minimum. This breed has a moderately long coat with an average shedding rate, but regular brushing will help avoid mats and reduce shedding. These regular grooming sessions will also help dog owners spot any potential skin problems early, when they are most treatable.
