| Kittens: Litter Training the Easy Way
Kittens are very easy to litter train, and when introduced to a litter box, with a little encouragement, they begin doing what comes naturally right away. Although litter training a kitten is really very easy, there’s more to encouraging a new kitten to use the litter box than simply filling the box with litter. Prompting the kitten to use it is an essential part of training as is keeping the litter box clean and fresh on a regular basis.
Litter Box Placement
Cats and kittens appreciate privacy when using a litter box, and it’s best to choose a location that’s somewhat secluded from the busiest areas of the home. A secondary bathroom or utility room is a good location, and placing the opening of a covered box toward a wall will provide adequate privacy for your new kitten.
If your home has multiple levels, consider placing a litter box on every level. Although you’ll have the task of scooping and cleaning multiple litter boxes, your kitten will be more likely to continue practicing good litter box habits if he doesn’t have as far to travel to find one.
Litter Box Introduction
Introduce your new kitten to the litter box by placing him in the box. Cats are naturally curious, so let him sniff the litter for a few seconds. Next, gently hold his leg while raking his paw through the litter. More than likely, he’ll take the opportunity to continue digging and relieve himself. He’ll naturally know what to do when he’s in the litter box, and after he realizes what this boxed filled with litter is actually for, he’ll begin using it regularly.
Keeping it Clean
The length of time cats spend grooming themselves is a reflection of their clean nature, and cats absolutely despise dirty litter boxes. Cats have been known to go elsewhere if their boxes become too dirty, so to keep your kitten using his litter box consistently, it’s important to keep it clean.
Regularly scoop out clumps and sections of wet litter, and if you’re using ordinary scented or unscented clay litter, completely change the box once a week or more often if necessary. Clumping litter should be scooped at least once a day and completely changed at least once a month to keep your cat happy and your home smelling fresh and clean.
