Housebreaking Your Puppy the Easy Way

Puppies are boundless bundles of energy, and their sweet little faces and adorable personalities quickly draw us in and melt our hearts. Although puppies are cute and loveable, their cuteness and adorability quickly lessen when they begin relieving themselves on carpets and other indoor areas. A puppy, just like any other baby, has no idea that wetting and defecating on flooring isn’t acceptable, but with a lot of patience, positive discipline, and repetition, your new puppy will learn what’s acceptable and what isn’t faster than you ever thought possible.

Necessary Supplies

A crate is a very useful tool in housebreaking a puppy. A puppy introduced to a crate, very quickly begins considering the crate his den, and a dog isn’t likely to dirty his own den. Just make sure the crate you buy provides room to grow and allows the puppy plenty of room to stand up and turn around comfortably.

Line your puppy’s den with a thick blanket or towel as well an item that contains your scent such as a shirt or a scarf. When you can’t give your puppy your undivided attention, or when you have to leave him alone for short periods of time, he won’t make a mess of your house, and he’ll feel safe and comfortable in his very own space. Your puppy will look forward to sleeping in his den, and you won’t have to worry about him having accidents when you can’t be around to watch his every move.

Setting Limits

Before your puppy understands the concept of going outdoors, keep him confined to certain areas of the home unless you’re holding him or playing with him. Consider investing in a baby gate, and give him free reign of areas that are easy to clean after accidents occur. There will most certainly be accidents at first, and if you set limits in advance, the messes will be much easier to clean up, and problems will be much fewer.

Going Outdoors

Until your puppy knows what he’s supposed to do, take him outside approximately every forty-five minutes. In addition, take your puppy out immediately after he awakens from naps and right after meals. Repeatedly take him to the same areas in your yard, and he’ll eventually understand what he’s there for.

If you find that taking your puppy outside about every forty-five minutes isn’t often enough in the beginning, take him out every half hour or so. Puppies have small bladders, and some dogs need to go out more often than others. He’ll want to earn your praise, and he’ll eventually discover how to let you know when it’s time to go outside.

Praising Your Puppy

Keep in mind that your puppy is no more than a baby, and hitting him and raising your voice in anger is never acceptable. If your puppy makes a mistake and you catch him in the act, firmly tell him no, and kindly take him outdoors to his usual area. Praise him lavishly after he goes in his designated outdoor area, and in time, he’ll understand that going outdoors results in happiness and praise.

Your puppy wants nothing more than to gain the same unconditional love he gives to you. With lots of attention and the proper level of discipline, your puppy will finally understand that going on the floor is never acceptable, and when housebreaking your puppy the easy way, it won’t take long before he understands exactly what he’s suppose to do.
