 | | | | AKC Breed History - Great Pyrenees
These dogs take their name from the mountain range in southwestern Europe where they long have been used as guardians of the flocks.

| | Is a Great Pyr for You?
Pyrs combine a great intelligence with a deep devotion to family and home, and a natural-born instinct to guard and protect. While trustworthy, affectionate, gentle and tractable, they can become, when and if the need arises, protective guardians of their family and their territory. Thus, they command respect as watch dogs as well as admiration as pets.

| | | | | | Breed Profile
Great Pyrenees are gentle giants; they love children and are loyal and protective of their home and family.

| | Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue
Our Mission - "Successful rescue isn't done by one, but by many"
Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue, Inc. ("TGPR") was started on January 2, 2001 because one pyr lover was thrown head first into the problems of backyard breeding in Texas and its inhumane treatment of pyrs by finding a breeding pair of dirty, mistreated, unloved great pyrs in her own urban neighborhood.

| | | | | | SPIN (Saving Pyrs in Need) In Texas
SPIN, Inc is comprised of caring, dedicated Pyrenees families, who provide loving foster homes to the less fortunate of the breed, until approved adoptions can be carried out. SPIN, Inc is located in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas and we currently cover the North Central and North East corner of the state. Our rescued Gentle Giants come to us from many different sources, including but not limited to, shelters, abusive homes, owner release, and strays.

| | Northeast Pyr Rescue
Northeast Pyr Rescue (NEPR) is an all-volunteer, non-profit 501(C)3 organization established in 2003. Our purpose is to provide compassionate, coordinated, comprehensive rescue services and care for Great Pyrenees dogs in New England and New York. In three years of existence we have screened over 600 applications and placed over 200 dogs in new homes--an average of one dog a week.

| | | | | | North Florida Great Pyrenees Club Rescue
Every Great Pyr should be a wanted pyr, but in the event that this is not true, our club offers a rescue service. Dogs are accepted from local shelters or are given directly to Rescue by persons who, for whatever reason, can no longer keep the dog. Rescued pyrs are given vet care, shots and heartworm tests, and are spayed or neutered. The dogs are fostered by dedicated volunteers until suitable homes are found. The adoption donation for dogs goes right back into the rescue fund for other dogs in need.

| | Indy Great Pyrenees Rescue
Indy Great Pyrenees Rescue assists in the placement and rescue of homeless Great Pyrenees. If you are interested in adopting a rescue pyr, we maintain a wish list. If you have a pyr to surrender - please contact us too. We require owner surrendered pyrs be on heart worm preventative or have a recent heartworm test anitgen and have current vaccines Or, pay a $50 surrender fee to cover these costs. A positive heart worm test is not a basis for IGPR to decline taking your dog into rescue. However, knowing the results allows us to more effectively utilize our resources. We really need foster homes in central Indiana . If you can foster a pyr, we'd love to hear from you! We are located on the Northwestside of Indianapolis and cover central Indiana and north Central Kentucky . We are a small rescue who foster homeless pyrs in our home or foster homes.

Great Pyrenees are very protective of their territory, making for a wonderful family dog. However, a Pyrenees requires room to move and a fenced yard is needed.
