| Five Strange Cat Breeds
If you weren't looking closely you might think that the planet is populated with short-hair tabby cats and kittens moving too fast to identify. Slow down a minute and look in the right places, though, and you'll see that there are dozens of kinds of cats, some fairly normal looking and others almost too strange to believe. Here's a concise description of a few of the latter:
Maine Coon Cat: The only house cat native to North America, the Maine Coon was once wrongly thought to actually be part raccoon! With fat paws, a regal mane and a huge floofy tail, the Maine Coon cat can be a fabulous, affectionate companion pet. Like tigers, Maine Coons aren't at all averse to water and although he won't jump headfirst into a pool, he will allow you to bathe him in the bathtub.
Korat: From Thailand, the Korat has a silvery-blue sleek coat and wide green eyes. Korats are some of the smallest domestic cats and in their native home of Thailand, having one around is considered very good luck.
Abyssinian: Mostly sorrel, or reddish, Abyssinians are naturally active -even more so than most cats - their curiosity is hilarious to watch. They have fairly enormous ears and get along with dogs more than most cats will.
Ocicat: Bred from a combination of Abyssinian, American Shorthair and Siamese, the Ocicat looks very much like a wild cat, but with a safer temperament. These smallish kitties are quite sociable and if you're looking for a super affectionate companion, the Ocicat may be just right for you.
Selkirk Rex: A natural mutation has given the Rex cats their distinctive curly coats. The Selkirk is special among the Rexes in that rather than the long, sleek body the others have, this Rex is roundish and stocky.
Most every cat lover will be smitten with any kitten, whether show-breed quality or ragamuffin alley cat. If you take the time to learn about the various cat breeds you will find a whole world of wonderful whiskered friends.
