| Enjoying a Good Walk
Apart from companionship and affection, one of the great things about owning a dog is having a good reason for going on a long walk. Regularly walking your dog is not only important for your dog’s health and well-being, it is also a valuable exercise for helping to maintain your health and fitness. However, before you begin taking your dog out for walks it is important to invest in a good collar and lead, which is the correct size and strength for restraining your dog when necessary.
It is probably a good idea to find out whether there are any dog training classes in your area when you first get your dog. Dog training classes will help you to understand your dog and show you how to bond well together. Training your dog well right from the outset will ensure that your dog behaves properly on the lead whenever you go out. A properly trained dog will always be easier to handle, particularly if it is large and powerful, and being able to keep it under control at all times will certainly help you to deal with any difficult situations that may arise whilst you are out walking together.

As a responsible dog owner you should keep your dog on a lead at all times whilst in public places such as footpaths, shopping areas, parks where children are playing, gardens, country parks – particularly where sheep, cattle, horses, deer, or other wildlife are present, and anywhere close to a busy road. Even if you feel confident about the obedience of your dog, you can never be absolutely sure that nothing will startle it or attract its attention.
There are other points to bear in mind too, whilst out with your dog. You must always carry bags, scoops, etc, with you to clean up after your pet, as dog faeces can be a health hazard, particularly to young children. Keeping your dog wormed regularly is also important, as these external parasites can be transmitted to humans.
Nowadays some places offer specific areas designated for exercising your dog. This is a brilliant idea, as it allows you to let your dog off the lead and have a good run around without any additional worries. If you don’t know whether there are any near you, it is certainly worth taking the trouble to find out.
When you take your dog out it is probably a good idea to take a few dog treats with you too, as this can help to reinforce good behaviour. If you are going out for a long time or the weather is particularly hot, you may need to take water with you in case your dog gets thirsty. You can now purchase travelling dog bowls, which are much easier to take out with you.
Always make sure that your dog is safe and secure in your home too; keep doors shut, particularly if you have a busy road nearby, and always make sure that your garden is well secured. Keeping your dog safe, secure and happy will help to ensure that you both spend many happy years together.
