Dogs: The Terrier Group

Terriers may have originated in the British Isles. In fact, early breeds in the Terrier Group earned their keep as good ratters or vermin catchers. Their wedge shaped heads along with their strong muscles helped these dogs to dig for rodents and other burrowing animals.

Their facial features are designed to protect them from the wrath of the prey. Their skin on the face is tightly drawn and the hairs around their mouths are stiff and hard.

These dogs were good protectors as well. Today, they are still good protectors and pest controllers as well, although many terrier owners may not use them for that purpose.

All of the terriers tend to have similar dispositions. Terriers are sharp in both movement and reaction, meaning that they are inclined to move or act first. Unfortunately, terriers can be a bit rambunctious and unfriendly, meaning they will get into it with the neighbor’s dog. Likewise, although dogs may be man’s best friends, the terrier may not be the deliveryman’s best friend.

Terriers come with either short legs or long. Their coats are available in three different types including soft, smooth, and wire. The wire haired breeds require a bit more grooming care since the dead hairs from their coats must actually be clipped or plucked.

The following dogs are included in the Terrier Group:

Airedale Terrier Australian Terrier Bedlington Terrier Border Terrier Bull Terrier Cairn Terrier Czesky Terrier Dandie Dinmont Smooth Fox Terrier Wire Fox Terrier Irish Terrier Glen of Imaal Terrier Kerry Blue Terrier Lakeland Terrier Manchester Terrier Norfolk Terrier Norwich Terrier Parson Jack Russell Scottish Terrier Sealyham Terrier Skye Terrier Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier Staffordshire Bull Terrier Welsh Terrier West Highland White Terrier

Breeds found in the Terrier Group are typically alert and playful. Additionally, terriers make good family pets since they are quite affectionate towards their owners. Terriers have a great deal of energy and spirit; therefore, obedience training is often a good idea.
