Doberman Pinscher: An Excellent Breed

Doberman Pinschers are one of the most common dog breeds. They were originally bred in Germany and were commonly used as guard dogs and police dogs. Dobermans are energetic, alert, intelligent and loyal companions. The most common color of a Doberman Pinscher is black but there are also red, blue and fawn with fawn being the least common color. The average weight for a male is between seventy-five to one hundred pounds with females weighing fifty to seventy-five pounds.

Doberman Pinschers are born with a tail that is longer than normally seen. The reason for this is that most Doberman’s tails are docked shortly after the animal’s birth. Docking is becoming illegal in more and more countries. The Doberman is born with longer, flopping ears than those commonly seen and this is due to a procedure in which the dog’s ears are cropped and then tapped to stand upright. Cropping is also becoming illegal in some parts of the world although many argue that cropping can help to lessen the chance of ear infections and other conditions that may affect the ears. There is no evidence to indicate that cropping lessens possibility of infection.

Doberman’s have excellent physical prowess and usually enjoy good health. They can be prone to certain conditions such as hip dysplasia, hyperthyroidism and bloat. Some Dobermans may develop an inherited and sometimes fatal heart disease. Dobermans should have a thorough health exam on a regular basis as the condition can develop in the future. The average lifespan for Doberman Pinschers is ten years.

The blue and fawn Dobermans often suffer from a condition known as Color Dilution Alopecia that can cause severe hair loss. This condition usually occurs in dogs bred for an unusual color coat. It is not exclusive to the Doberman and may occur in other breeds such as the Chihuahua, Chow, Irish Setter, Great Dane and others. The condition can be treated with antibiotics but the hair may be very slow to grow back and in some cases it may not.

Many people have the mistaken belief that Doberman Pinschers are vicious dogs. This is a stereotype of Dobermans. In reality, any dog can be vicious if provoked. Dobermans certainly have the physical ability to be aggressive and even vicious but this is not necessarily their natural temperament. Doberman Pinschers are excellent watchdogs and will protect their owners and family members against danger, with physical aggression if needed. Dobermans are loving, loyal and intelligent dogs. This breed is the perfect family companion. Doberman Pinschers can get along well with young children, other dogs and even cats. They are wonderful companions and adapt easily to family life.
