The Rottweiler was originally bred to be a protector of livestock, but its powerful features soon made it a favored guard dog as well. The Rottweiler continues to be a much favored watch dog and guard dog to this day, as well as a trusted companion and family member.

Females tend to be a bit smaller, with a height of between 22 and 25 inches and an average weight ranging from 85 to 115 pounds.

When buying a puppy from a breeder, it is important to get assurances that the parents have been tested for this genetic defect. Reputable Rottweiler breeders are constantly trying to breed this disease out of their puppies. It is also important for Rottweiler owners to develop a good relationship with a quality veterinarian and to discuss any breed specific health concerns with the vet.
