| Dogs: Avoiding Common Household Poisons
Cleaning products, foods, plants, and other common household chemicals can be poisonous to your dog.
Most people are aware that chocolate is poisonous to dogs. Xylitol, an artificial sweetener commonly found in chewing gum and mints, can be deadly in very small doses. Just a few pieces of candy or gum containing this sweetener can cause seizures and vomiting within minutes. Macadamia nuts are also toxic in small amounts, but do not seem to be as deadly. Onions are poisonous to dogs causing haemolytic anaemia which is a condition where red blood cells burst while circulating through the body. If your dog consumes a small amount of onions do not panic. Most dogs are unaffected by just a few bites of onion now and then. Raisins are poisonous in large amounts. Pits of pear, peaches, plums, apricots, and apples can cause cyanide poisoning. Bacon grease, while not toxic, will cause diarrhea.
