Chihuahua: The Smallest Breed

Chihuahuas may be tiny but they’re dynamite in a small package. The Chihuahua is the smallest of all dog breeds. It is believed that they were brought to Mexico by Spanish settlers. The Chihuahua is named after Chihuahua state in Mexico. They are easily recognized by their small size and somewhat large, bulging eyes. Chihuahuas come in a variety of colors including black, white, tan, brown, grey and cream. Their coloring may be solid or mixed with various markings.

The Chihuahua’s small appearance can be somewhat misleading since these dogs are not always even tempered. While many of them are quite social others are not. They tend to be jealous, anxious and possessive but are devoted to their owners. Chihuahuas can make excellent pets with proper training. This breed may not be the best dog to have around small children due to their jealous nature. Chihuahuas are also more apt to be accidentally injured by children due to their small size and fragile.

Chihuahuas are perfect dogs for people who live in apartments since they don’t require much space. Chihuahuas are intelligent dogs, devoted companions and often fearless to a fault. These little dogs have a tendency to approach much larger dogs with no fear or realization of their own size. Unfortunately, serious injuries may occur. For this reason, owners should always keep their Chihuahuas restrained by walking them on a leash for their own safety. If Chihuahuas have been socialized with other pets they may respond amicably but many Chihuahuas are not as accepting of other dogs.

If you live in a cold weather climate Chihuahuas need to be protected against the cold. Their small body size makes them susceptible to the cold and they may become ill. If you’ve ever seen a Chihuahua shiver from cold you will understand why they should be kept warm. Most owner of this breed will wear dog sweaters on their pets to keep them warm and protect them from harsh winter weather.

It is important for Chihuahuas to get proper nutrition but be careful not to overfeed them. Due to their delicate nature, overfeeding could cause unnecessary health problems. The average lifespan of a Chihuahua is approximately ten to fifteen years but Chihuahuas are prone to certain health conditions such as seizure disorders and eye infections. This breed will do well with proper care, nutrition and attention. Give your Chihuahua lots of love and attention and he will be your best friend.
