| Cat Breeds – The Mysterious Norwegian Forest Cat
While the name may sound wild, the breed known today as the Norwegian Forest Cat is a thoroughly domesticated breed. This cat has a long and storied history with the human race; indeed this is the cat that protected the grain carried by the Vikings from marauding mice and other creatures, and they continue to perform this vital service to this day.
One of the most striking features of the Norwegian Forest Cat is its beautiful coat, but in fact this fantastic feline has two coats in one. As the warm weather arrives, the cat will shed the long undercoat that provided warmth through the winter, revealing a lovely summer coat which glistens in the sun.
These magnificent coats come in a variety of different colors, from the purest white to the deepest darkest black, with every possible variation in between these two extremes. The lighter cats tend to have the thickest coats, since the body color of the darker cats helps them to retain more heat.
Unlike many other longhair cats, the Norwegian Forest Cat requires very little in the way of daily grooming, but a good combing during the spring shedding season will help to reveal the glorious coat underneath more quickly. The coat of the Norwegian Forest Cat is less prone to tangling and matting than many other breeds, making this feline a good choice for the busy household. These cats are known for being friendly, well mannered, and very devoted to their owners. Those looking for a cat with a long history of human service and companionship should definitely look to the Norwegian Forest Cat.
