| Cat Breeds – The Lovely Manx
Many breeds of cat are of course known for their distinctive body shape and features, and the most pronounced feature of the Manx is of course its lack of a tail. The Manx originated on the Isle of Man, hence the name, and it is thought to have arisen as a spontaneous mutation among the island’s domestic cat population.
The gene responsible for the Manx breed’s lack of tail is a dominant one, and kittens which inherit the gene may have a full tail, a short tail or no tail. In fact, breeders often find all three tail lengths in a single litter. The appearance of a full tail in a Manx litter is not a sign of failure, however, as the introduction of a full tailed individual into a breeding program provides a great sturdiness and hardiness.
The Manx appears in both longhair and shorthair varieties, with the shorthair variety possessing a double coat and a glossy appearance. The longhair variety possesses a coat with a silky texture and a medium length.
The Manx tends to be a very playful and active breed, and they are often able to perform amazing feats of leaping when playing. This breed possesses a very strong hindquarters, which is no doubt responsible for their amazing leaping ability. In addition, the Manx is known to be one of the most doglike of breeds, with many Manx learning to fetch and hide their toys like dogs. Those cat lovers who are looking for a playful companion with an individual twist may want to consider bringing a Manx into their home.
