There are many unique characteristics that set cat breeds apart from one another, but coat type is one of the most common. For instance, it is the strikingly beautiful curly coat of the LaPerm that gives it its name and its charm. It is the personality of the breed, however, that has led to its popularity, and those who have met the breed will never forget the experience.
The coat type of the LaPerm is quite variable, ranging from a beautiful wavy coat to tighter ringlet style curls. These ringlets can vary as well, from very tight curls to longer corkscrew curls. The tightest curls tend to occur on the underside of the body, around the throat and around the base of the ears. The longhair variety often carries a curly plumed tail and often a full curly ruff as well.
The coat texture of the LaPerm is moderately soft, but each cat has its own unique coat. The shorthair LaPerm tends to have a thicker coat texture than the longhair version, and the breed comes in a wide variety of coat patterns and colors.
Some LaPerm kittens may be born completely without hair, but most will have a short and wavy coat of hair or a straight coat as newborns. The coat of the LaPerm kitten will retain its curl as long as the kitten was born curly, and the maturing cat may go through various stages of baldness during its first four months of life.
The LaPerm is a gentle and affectionate breed, but it is also quite an active one. Even though it has a high activity level, however, the LaPerm is known as a great lap cat, and can be quite content to simply sit in the lap of its favorite human and enjoy a good nap. The LaPerm has a curious and inquisitive nature, and it likes to be underfoot, where it can share in the comings and goings of the family. Those looking for an intelligent and engaging cat with a beautiful and unique coat may want to look at this unique breed.
