 | Border Collies
Border collies are one of the smartest dog breeds in the world. They are from the herding group, and are very active dogs. They make excellent herding dogs, because of their intelligence and ability to reason situations out for themselves, as well as their speed and stamina. They also make great pets for people who lead an active lifestyle, and wants a dog to jog with, or one that will play fetch or frisbee all afternoon. Border collies excel at frisbee, fetch, agility, flyball, and just about any activity a dog can be taught to perform. Border collies have even been used in search and rescue work.
Because border collies are so active and energetic, they do not usually do well in apartments, or with families where they will not get a lot of exercise. They need a job to do, or they tend to go "kennel crazy". There's a saying often heard in the border collie world: Give them a job to do, or they will make their own. If you let them choose what "job" they do, it usually is not what you want, whether chewing furniture or shredding paper.
Border collies come in a wide variety of colors. The most traditional color is black with white markings, but they can also come in white with black markings, red, blue merle, red merle, and tri-colored. They usually weigh between thirty and fifty pounds, and can either be long haired, also called rough coated, or short haired, called smooth coat. You will need to ask the breeder which type of coat their dogs have. They are lean dogs, built for speed, and their coats have what is known as an "undercoat", to help keep them both warm and dry in their herding work on farms.
The border collie is so smart, sometimes you will find yourself wondering which of you is smarter. They have a beautiful grin when they are happy, and they love to please. If you are looking for an active dog to join your life and family, a dog that is both smart and beautiful, and one that will provide you with hours of fun play, the border collie may be just the dog for you.
