 | Border Collies – The Most Intelligent of Dog Breeds
Are you trying to decide which breed of dog you would like to join your family? Are you a farmer or rancher who could use some help herding your livestock? If you have time to invest in your new dog, you might consider a Border Collie.
Border Collies come from the border country of Scotland and northern England. Originally bred to help shepherds herd sheep or other animals, they continue to work around the world today. During the 19th century, breeding sought to include such traits as the watchful eye of the setter and stealth speed of a racing hound.
Their breeding was for working ability, not for appearance, so they vary widely in looks. Most common is black and white; but they can also be tri-colored black, white, and brown, or less common, reddish-brown and white.
They love to gather, and if they do not have any sheep to round up, they will try to herd other “animals” such as pets, people, cars, bicycles, or even birds.
Border Collies are extremely intelligent, which makes them appealing to many potential dog owners. In considering one of these great dogs, you must honestly estimate how much time you can devote to your new pet. Because of the breeding and intelligence, they will easily become bored without some type of work to do. Unfortunately, many Border Collies end up in rescue shelters because their owners failed to provide ample physical and mental stimulation.
These dogs actually love to work, and require lots of attention from their owners. Often, another dog can help provide stimulation. They are very energetic and responsive to training. Because of their intelligence, they have been known to learn to open doors, or to better interpret what their owner is saying to them. It could be possible to tell them to ‘get your ball from the yard’ and they will open the door, retrieve their ball, and bring it to you.
If you seek a dog of high intelligence and have considerable time to devote to them, the Border Collie can be a good choice for a pet. You may also consider sheep herding trials or other sports competitions, which can provide the much-needed physical and mental stimulation. With time and attention, your Border Collie can provide you with years of wonderful camaraderie.
