| Big Dog or Small – Which is Right for You
Throughout many centuries dogs have been the trusted companions of human beings, guarding their livestock, watching their homes and enriching their lives. Many homes and hearts have been blessed by the presence of these noble beasts, and many dog lovers are looking for just the right companion.
These days dogs come in just about every shape, size and color imaginable, with more than 150 breeds in existence, not to mention the endless combinations represented by the much loved mutt. With all these choices it can be difficult to find just the right dog, and one of the first questions many would be pet parents ask is whether to choose a small dog or a larger one.
While it may seem like a simple question, there are many variables that go into answering it. One of the biggest factors, of course, is the nature of the home. Apartment dwellers, and those with little space for a dog to run, may have trouble coping with the energy of a large and frisky canine. Apartment and townhouse dwellers with their heart set on a large dog may want to consider adopting an older animal, who may be more settled and less energetic.
The cost of keeping a large versus a small dog should be carefully considered as well. High quality, premium dog food can be just as costly per pound than the food people eat, and a large dog will of course cost more to feed and care for than a smaller one. Vet bills, grooming and similar expenses can also be higher for a large dog.
Last but not least, the decision of large versus small dog often boils down to personal preference. Many people are confirmed large dog lovers, and they may not be happy with a smaller dog. Buying or adopting a dog is very much a personal decision, and it is important that every pet parent choose the dog that will make their home and their life complete.
