Bichon Frise: Lovable Toy

“Fluffy little dog” is how Bichon Frise is translated from the French. This lovable little toy breed is in the poodle family but is typically smaller (between nine and eleven) inches and boasts a fluffy tail. Affectionate and cheerful, this adorable dog is ideal for households with children or for small living quarters.

Associated with royalty, the Bichon Frise were once the playthings of kings at court. Today they are prized for their disposition and handsome appearance—specifically their snow-white coat and dark eyes. This breed is generally active, but does not require extensive exercise. They have no known health conditions and their average life expectancy is fourteen years.

Most guides will explain that the Bichon Frise coat requires extensive care. This can certainly be true if you follow appearance guidelines and have the coat styled accordingly. However, the dog is quite charming without its pretentious coiffure—simply be sure to brush the coat to prevent knots.

The coat is also one of this dog’s attributes. The coat resembles fur as opposed to hair so shedding is not an issue. This is a great boon for people who don’t like dog hair sticking to everything, but more importantly, it can be a good choice for an owner with allergies. While many asthmatic children cannot have pets, some may do perfectly well with a Bichon Frise.

The only other grooming issue for the dogs can be the leaking eyes. Brown gunk can stick to the surrounding hair near the eyes. Owners will need to remove this regularly—it typically demands only a few minutes if maintained weekly. Special drops may help with the cleaning.

Finally, the Bichon Frise is not just a pretty little dog; it is an excellent watchdog. Beneath its cute appearance lies a stout little heart willing and able to alert the house to all visitors. If you’re in the market for a little dog, this breed is utterly charming.
