 | A Beloved Breed: Old English Sheepdog
Big, cuddly and lovable can sum up this ancient breed of sheepdog. While they are billed as worthy and hardworking guard dogs, their sweet temperament makes them a favorite family dog. This shaggy dog grows upwards of twenty-four inches and can weigh in around eighty pounds (females grow about twenty-two inches).
Old English Sheepdogs require running room; in fact, the more room for this, at turns, lumbering and galloping canine the better. Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of this dog is its fluffy coat—a coat that does not shed, but requires daily brushing to ward off matted knots. The undercoat is water proof and the coloration is frequently a mix of white, charcoal, gray and even blue.
Although the breed is famous for its coat, it can be shaved shorter to eliminate the task of daily grooming. Because this breed is not as pretentious about its appearance as a Husky (that will preen itself like a cat), it can appear rather sloppy after mealtime or during mucky weather. Be sure to leave some overhang for the eyes which can be sensitive to sunlight. Also, never have the dog’s coat shaved too close to the skin or sunburn can be an issue.
Full of personality and charm, the Old English Sheepdog is a sweet bear of a dog. With its broad face and bobbed tail, it is one of the most widely recognized breeds world wide. While still capable of herding sheep, he can quite happily be installed as a member of any family.
