 | The American Eskimo Dog
American Eskimo dogs are best known for their beautiful white coats and long white eyelashes that greatly enhance their beautiful deep brown eyes. They look like a smaller version of the Samoyed, and they are very similar in appearance to the Spitz. Unbeknownst to some, the American Eskimo dog comes in standard, toy, and miniature varieties, and they make fantastic family pets and faithful companions.
Personality
The gentle and loving personality of the American Eskimo dog is just as appealing as its appearance. This breed of dog generally has a very friendly personality, and they are a fantastic choice in homes with children. Although all dogs are different, they aren’t typically hyperactive, aggressive, or demanding, and once you make an American Eskimo dog a part of your family, you’ll fall in love with this very special breed.
Health Concerns & Life Expectancy
With proper veterinary care and attention, the American Eskimo dog can live at least fifteen years, but this breed is sometimes afflicted with retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia, and skin problems due to their thick inner coats. In addition, this breed has a tendency for weight gain without proper diet and sufficient exercise, but overall this breed is easy to care for.
Coat Care
The coat of the American Eskimo dog is especially thick around the neck and the rear, and brushing can take a great deal of time, especially when the coat is very thick during the cooler months. Professional grooming can be very beneficial, and in warmer areas, this breed is more comfortable with a shorter coat during the hottest weeks of summer.
Brown streaks from the inner corners of the eyes are a common occurrence with this breed, but there are special pet products available for cleaning around the eyes. There are also special shampoos and conditioners that will beautifully whiten and brighten the coat while making grooming easier.
Fleas and ticks are more difficult to notice in the thick fur, but evidence of fleas is generally more apparent on the abdomen where the fur isn’t as substantial. Consider purchasing prescription medications to control and prevent pests before they become an irritating problem.
Exercise
American Eskimo dogs love taking long leisurely walks with their owners, and they make wonderful companions. They love going outside with their owners, and they vocally make their displeasure known if their human companions leave on foot without them. This breed also loves to play lively games of hide-and-seek and tug-of-war. If you’re looking for a playful canine companion with a gentle personality, the American Eskimo dog is an all-around excellent choice.
