Historically known as the Waterside, Bingley or Working Terrier, the Airedale breed is named after a valley in the Yorkshire. Active and full of energy, Airdales are water-lovers and never happier than when splashing about.
Airedales are not an ancient breed of dog. They were developed in the nineteenth century by crossing Otter Hounds with Black and Tan Terriers (now extinct). With their adorable looks and loyal traits, Airedales make for a most charming pet. Although they are giants in the terrier world, they only grow up to about twenty-three inches.
It may be interesting to note that this breed has a rather heroic past. One of the first dog breeds to be recruited for service in WWI, one fellow (called Jack) actually won the Victoria Cross for his contributions to the war effort.
Caring for these dogs means committing to their daily need for activity and exercise. While their stiff wiry coat will need some grooming, they only shed minimal hair. Because they have such an excellent temperament, they make wonderful pets. Keep in mind, however, their reputation for unruly behavior that must be held in check by a firm, but kind hand.
