'Properly trained, a man can be dog's best friend.' So goes the saying attributed to the American writer, Corey Ford.
Nothing could be more true of the Airedale breed. Proud, vain and stubborn, the Airedale (dog or bitch) will be attempting to train you, the owner, to its most exquisitely refined tastes. To speak personally of my own Airedale from some years back, I can testify to their calculating appraisal of human sensibilities when it comes to pets: they know you love them for their aristocratic pretensions and they are more than happy to prey on your own 'upwardly-mobile' pretensions.
Airedales are the Noel Cowards of the dog world: highly intelligent, coldly manipulating with a sublime sense of humor, subtly showing up your futile antics as you hit a ball which he has no intention of chasing let alone retrieving. Normally a direct stare into your eyes, with his own eyebrows raised, is enough to make you realise that it is you who is acting like a child and that he, with his own advanced intellect, will never, never indulge in such puerile antics. How deflating to be bested by a mere dog, but how ennobling to strut such a fine specimen along the sidewalk.
Airedales are an aristocratic breed, but, seriously, don't forget that they are also hunting and working dogs used extensively and to great effect in WW1 as couriers under the most exacting of conditions. Airedales will love you for respecting them for the qualities and standing that they alone own within the canine kingdom.
Here are one or two facts about Airedales:

Roosevelt said of them: "An Airedale can do anything any other dog can do, and then lick the other dog, if needs be."

Airedales are hound-like in tracking capabilities.

They will ferret and flush out like a well-bred spaniel.
*
They are great as guard dogs, instinctively knowing when something is different or wrong.
*
They are ever alert but normally only bark at a serious alarm.
*
They are fantastic at herding, and love it, if properly trained.
*
They will readily snuffle rats and other vermin.
*
They are used in several countries for a variety of police work. Why?
*
Due to their immense intelligence. Watch out!
